How to Get a Useful Estimate

The quality of the output depends entirely on the quality of three inputs: your annual electricity usage, your effective electricity rate, and the production you can realistically expect per kilowatt of solar installed at your address.

Start with kilowatt-hours, not dollars

A bill total mixes energy charges with fixed service charges, taxes and fees. Pull twelve months of kilowatt-hour readings from your billing history and average them. In South Texas the summer months usually dominate annual consumption because of cooling load, so a single winter bill will understate your real usage badly.

Calculate your own rate

Divide the energy portion of a recent statement by the kilowatt-hours billed on that statement. That figure — not the default in the calculator — is what your offset kilowatt-hours are worth to you today.

Replace the production assumption when you can

Production per kilowatt varies with roof orientation, tilt, shading from trees or nearby structures, module efficiency, inverter losses and soiling. Once a designer has modeled your actual roof planes, put their annual production estimate into the calculator and see how the picture changes.   • Surplus production beyond your usage is not valued, because credit terms vary.
  • No rate escalation is applied — the modeled rate stays flat across all years.
  • No production degradation is applied; real modules output slightly less each year.
  • Two systems of identical size can produce differently on different roof planes.

What does this solar savings calculator actually estimate?

It converts your electricity bill or usage into annual kilowatt-hours, applies an assumed production figure per kilowatt of installed solar, and values the offset kilowatt-hours at your assumed electricity rate. The result is an estimate of avoided electricity purchases, not a net financial return. System cost, financing charges, fees and incentives are deliberately excluded so you can see the energy side on its own.

Why does the calculator ask for my electricity rate?

Savings are the product of offset kilowatt-hours and the price you pay per kilowatt-hour. A bill total alone cannot separate energy charges from fixed monthly charges, taxes and fees, so the calculator asks you to supply the rate. Look at a recent statement, divide the energy portion by the kilowatt-hours billed, and enter that figure rather than the default.

What production figure should I use per kilowatt?

Annual production per kilowatt depends on roof orientation, tilt, shading, module and inverter efficiency, temperature and soiling. The calculator defaults to a round assumption so the math is transparent, but a designer modeling your specific roof planes with shading data will give you a far better number. Enter that number here once you have it.

Are these savings guaranteed?

No. This is a planning estimate only. Actual production, utility rates, system cost, incentives and savings vary by property and provider. Electricity rates change over time, production varies year to year with weather, and equipment output declines gradually. Treat the output as a range-setting exercise, not a projection you can rely on financially.

Why is my savings estimate capped at my usage?

The calculator only counts production up to your modeled annual consumption. Electricity exported beyond what you use is credited under whatever buyback or interconnection arrangement applies to your account, and those terms vary by provider and can change. Rather than assume a credit rate, the tool leaves surplus production out of the savings figure.

Does the calculator include the cost of the system?
